Knik 200-Joe Redington Sr. Memorial Sled Dog Race
RACE RULES
The Knik 200 Joe Redington Sr. Sled Dog Race is a limited class sled dog race for all Dog Mushers meeting the qualifications as set forth by the Knik 200 Race committee.
The Knik 200 covers 200 miles and is an Iditarod sanctioned race, therefore Iditarod Rules apply unless otherwise stated. In addition the Knik 200 race committee has established the following rules to govern this race.
1. The purse has yet to be determined. Mail entry fees payable to Knik 200

This years race will have a 40 team limit...
Entry fee $275 until Dec. 10th,'08,
$325 from Dec. 10th-Dec.28th,'08-the cut off date....

Drop/food bags, max.40lb. per bag' 80lb max total, at Willow Airport (preferred)site will be marked or Knik Bar (site will be marked) Dec.28th, '08 - Jan. 1st., '09...any food drops after that date will be carried in the musher's sled.....straw will be provided at Skewentna Roadhouse...this is the Only official check point, the half way point, times will be adjusted there, mandatory 6hr. layover...any fuel will be carried by the musher....
Iditarod rules apply, unless noted on the website or by the Race Marshal at the Musher's meeting.......
Team size will be 16 dogs max. with 5 required at the finish....
This team size will be determined by the trail conditions, as set by the Race Marshal and Trail crew at the Musher Meeting or before if necessary.... withdrawal/refund date tbd.....
Sponsor bibs will be available for $100, with sponsor name and musher's signatures......a random drawing will be held at the musher meeting for bib numbers (starting order)...Bibs will be sent to the sponsor....who draws/wears a bib/sponsor name will be totally random, based on the drawing......we encourage all mushers to sign the bibs at the musher's meeting to insure further support for the Knik 200.
A vet and dog drop area will be set up in Skwentna with dog return to Knik for a fee of $30.00 per dropped dog/ observe race rules regarding drop ties (metal only) and dog food.
2. All race entrants must be 18 yrs. of age at the start of the race. All entrants will be required to sign participation release forms provided by the KNIK 200 Joe Redington Sr. Memorial Sled Dog Race.
IMPORTANT: QUALIFYING ROOKIES MUST FOLLOW THE RULES SET FORTH BY THE IDITAROD TRAIL COMMITTEE FOR ROOKIES.
3. The KNIK 200 committee demands humane treatment of the dogs at all times. Race team size for starting the KNIK 200 is 8-dog minimum and 16-dog maximum (trail permitting). There must be 5 dogs in harness to complete the race.
4. Dog drops will be at the New Skwentna Roadhouse, each dropped dog must have 4 lb. of dog food and a 12" - 18" drop cable with snaps on both ends. Dog will be returned to Knik Lake by the KNIK 200-race pilot, there will be a $30.00 fee per dog. The musher is responsible to have dropped dogs, picked up within 24hrs. of their return.
5. Food drops must be brought to the Knik Bar or Willow airport.
. Late food drops will be carried by the team. Food drop bags will be secured so that no wires will cut or tear the interior of the race volunteers aircraft.
NO FUEL WHATSOEVER IN FOOD DROPS TRANSPORTED BY AIRCRAFT
(musher is responsible for carrying fuel in sled)
6. Food drops will be located at the New Skwentna Roadhouse if the weather is flyable. If the weather prohibits flying the musher must have a minimum of 6 lb. of food per dog on leaving the starting line. All food drops will be in a "gunny" type bag and clearly marked with the musher's name and a weight of the bag.
The KNIK 200 will start at Jan 3,2009 All teams must be on Knik Lake by 9:00 a.m.
Each musher must have the mandatory gear with them at all times: Sleeping bag, Ax, Snowshoes -( 252 square inches min), Dog booties, Cooker stove as per Iditarod rule #5.ITC Race Rules 2004
The teams will depart the starting line at 2-minute intervals, the time differential will be adjusted on the layover.
The Knik 200 will follow marked trails from Knik Lake to the New Skwentna Roadhouse and back. Sign-in and a mandatory layover of 6 hours at the New Skwentna Roadhouse. Straw will be provided. No mans land will be Knik Lake on the return trail. The official finish will be the first dog's nose across the finish line.
Drug use by the musher is prohibited. See Iditarod rule #29.ITC Race Rules 2005
Drug use on dogs is prohibited as per Iditarod rule #20. Dogs may be tested at any time and may be disqualified as per Iditarod rule #20.ITC Race Rules 2005
There will be a pre-race vet check on all teams.Mushers will be required to present proof of current vaccinations, rabies from veterinarian; parvo,and distemper from vet or receipts if administered by musher. There will be a vet on hand to check over dogs prior to the start of the race. A race veterinarian will also be on hand at Skwentna.
The honor rule of good sportsmanship will be observed at all times.
Passing of teams will be as per Iditarod Rule #23.
The awards banquet will be at the Knik Bar, at 7 p.m. Sunday Jan 8,2006
IDITAROD RULES
Mandatory Items: Sleeping bag 5 lb., Ax 22'' long, 1 ¾ lb., Snowshoes 252 in. min, 8 booties per dog in sled or in use, Cooker capable of boiling at least 3 gallons of water.
23. Passing: When one team approaches to within fifty feet of another team, the team behind shall have the immediate right of way upon demand. The musher ahead must stop his dogs and hold them to the best of his ability for a maximum of one minute or until the other team has passed, whichever occurs first. The passed team must remain behind at least fifteen minutes before demanding the trail.
20. Drug Use: No injectable, oral or topical drug which may suppress the signs of illness or injury may
be used on a dog. A musher may not inject any substance into their dogs. No other drugs or other artificial means may be used to drive a dog or cause a dog to perform or attempt to perform beyond it's natural ability. (See Iditarod official rules for complete version of rule # 20).
